Home Practice

Students are asked to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night at home. Following their reading, please ask them follow-up questions about their reading to help build comprehension. Questions could be about characters, setting, retell, inferences, personal connections, and predictions. Please remember to log their reading minutes in their agenda each day. Students also have sight words to practice this year. It is two fold. They will first need to practice reading the words. They should be able to read them quickly, within 2 seconds. Once they pass the reading test, they will be asked to spell the words in their colour list (often 10-15 at a time). Once they can also pass the spelling tests, they will move on to the next colour. Another good idea is to practice math facts at home. This includes addition facts, subtraction facts, multiplication facts and division facts. Being comfortable and confident with their facts will help students to be able to successfully solve larger math problems.
