File Circle of Influence
Stephen Covey says that we each have a wide range of concerns. He calls this our "circle of concern". Within that circle are things that we have no control over, such as the weather, and things that we can do something about, such as our attitude. The things that we can do something about are in our "circle of influence". Proactive people focus their efforts on their circle of influence.
File Paradigm shift
Stephen Covey defines a paradigm as our perception, interpretation and understanding of the world around us. When we have a paradigm shift, we have a change in our initial perception of someone or something. It can be a break with tradition or old ways of thinking. We can call it an "Aha moment"!
File Habit 1 - Be proactive! Soyons proactifs!
Being proactive means that we are taking responsibility for our own lives. Our behaviour is a result of our decisions and actions, not our situation or circumstances. We have the responsibility and the initiative to make things happen. Proactive people focus their energy on their circle of influence, not on things they can do nothing about! We are in charge!
File Habit 2 - Begin with the end in mind! Sachons dès le depart ou nous voulons aller!
Beginning with the end in minds means starting today with the image or picture of the end of our lives as a way to examine our current behaviour, next week's behaviour, next year's behaviour...it is a way to look at what matters most to us. We start with a clear understanding of where we want to go and then decide on the steps we need to take to get there. Let's have a plan!
File Habit 3 - First things first! Donnons la priorite aux priorites!
Putting first things first means doing the work we need to do to achieve all we have envisioned with Habits 1 and 2. It means work first, then play.
File Habit 4 - Think win-win! Pensons gagnant/gagnant!
When we have a win-win frame of mind and heart, we are always trying to find agreements or solutions where everyone can benefit, feel good about the decisions being made and be committed to a mutual action plan. Everyone can be a winner!
File Habit 5 - Seek first to understand, then to be understood! Cherchons d'abord a comprendre, ensuite a etre compris!
When we seek first to understand, we listen with our ears, eyes and heart. We listen carefully and empathetically so we can truly understand the way another person sees the world. We want to try to understand the other person emotionally and intellectually. Listen first, then talk!
File Habit 6 - Synergize! Profitons de la synergie!
Synergy means that the whole is greater than just the sum of its parts. When we are synergizing, we are working with others and opening ourselves up to new possibilities, new perspectives, new alternatives, new options. Together is definitely better!
File Habit 7 - Sharpen the saw! Aiguisons nos facultes!
When we sharpen our saws, we are looking after our greatest asset - ourselves! Sharpening the saw means exercising, eating properly, getting together with family and friends, getting enough rest, reading or writing - anything that re-energizes us and re-charges our batteries. Balance feels best!
